Project Citizen Showcase for WCPS Middle School Students on May 2 at HCC
HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 25, 2012) – The 2012 Project Citizen Showcase will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Hagerstown Community College’s Career Programs Building. The event features classes from each Washington County middle school showcasing public policy issues. We the People: Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle school, high school and post-secondary students, youth organizations and adult groups that promotes and advocates participation in local and state government. Participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy, while developing support for democratic values and principles.
In the showcase, students have worked cooperatively to identify a public policy problem in the community. They have researched the issue, evaluated alternative solutions, developed their own solution in the form of a public policy and created a political action plan to enlist local or state officials to adopt the proposed policy. At the event, participants present a portfolio of their work in a public hearing showcase before a panel of judges comprised of civic-minded community members, such as educators, business people and representatives from government.
