HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 28, 2005) – Employees and retirees of the Washington County Public Schools have an open enrollment period for medical and dental insurance available from November 1 – 18, 2005. During that time, employees may enroll, change or cancel any medical and/or dental benefits. Enrollment or changes will take effect on January 1, 2006. Three medical plans and one dental plan are available to any employee who works 15 or more hours per week. The cost is based on the employee’s position and how many hours worked per week. Only retirees who currently participate in the medical and/or dental plan are eligible to enroll or make changes.

As of January 1, 2006, WCPS is changing from a two-tier (Single and Family) to a four-tier (Single, Parent/Child(ren), Husband/Wife, and Family) insurance premium structure. The changes result from negotiations with the various bargaining groups. The change will affect premiums on all tiers. The premium for Single and Family coverage will increase, but the premium for Parent/Child(ren) and Husband/Wife will decrease from the current Family premium.

If no changes to current coverage are planned, an employee is not required to take any action. For enrollment or changes in coverage an employee must complete a CareFirst Employee/Member Election Form, available from any WCPS school secretary or from the Benefits Office at the Central Office. To cancel coverage, a written request must be sent to the Benefits Office.
