HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 26, 2006) – The Penny-a-Page Reading Campaign conducted by the students of Clear Spring Middle School during Character Counts Week and Teen Read Week, October 16 – 20, 2006, raised $725 for the students’ selected charity, the Humane Society of Washington County. Students gained pledges of a penny per page of reading for that week, or pledges for set contributions to the campaign. Each participating student received a Character Counts coupon, which was to be placed in a drawing for prizes at each grade level. Students raising the largest contributions received other special prizes. “It’s a special feeling to be the recipient of the contributions gathered by the students and staff at Clear Spring Middle,” says Katherine Cooker, Manager of Fundraising and Community Relations for the Humane Society. “This was a fabulous show of character, good community spirit, and generosity by the students.” A check presentation ceremony is scheduled at Clear Spring Middle School on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at 8:45 a.m.
