HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 6 , 2008) - Western Heights Middle School students, PTSA, and Scholastic, the book publisher and distributor, are sponsoring a special book fair, Monday through Thursday, October 13-16, 2008, inviting students, teachers, parents, and the community to attend. Daytime hours will be 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., when a wide range of books from more than 150 publishers will be available. On Tuesday, October 14th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., students, their families, and the community are invited to an old-fashioned ice cream social. Door prizes, including Scholastic items, will be awarded throughout the evening. Scholastic is also offering the One for Books program, in which the company, for each dollar donated to the program at Western Heights, will donate one book to Toys for Tots, Kids in Distressed Situations, and the National Center for Family Literacy. Dr. Stephen Tarason, principal at Western Heights, said the One for Books program plays perfectly into the school motto, “Reach new heights at Western Heights.” Dr. Tarason says, “We encourage our students to go above and beyond and we can’t think of a better way to help our students understand that sometimes reaching new heights means reaching out to others.” He says the program increases book choices in school libraries like Western Heights and in the homes of Western Heights students. Area businesses interested in donating to the One for Books program can contact Roni Merrill, the chairperson of the book fair, at 301-739-4337. ### Washington County Public Schools provides all students access to world-class educational opportunities.
