HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 10 , 2008) - Hickory Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon Schools honoree by the U.S. Department of Education. The school is one of only six in Maryland that was presented with this honor. The National Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools that have worked hard to bridge educational achievement gaps or whose students achieve high levels of academic success. Schools are selected based on a thorough examination of assessment results and student achievement, curriculum and instruction, professional development of teachers, and school leadership structure. “I’m continually proud of the effort and dedication on the part of students and staff in Washington County schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Morgan. “This national ranking is a real testament to our community’s investment in the school system, especially at Hickory Elementary.” Hickory Elementary is the third school in Washington County to join this elite national rank. Hancock Middle-High and Salem Avenue Elementary are the other two.
