HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 27, 2006) – Pangborn Elementary School students and staff conducted a fundraiser, “Pennies for Patients,” on behalf of the Maryland Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in May, totaling $1,944. Mrs. Jill Waters’ fifth grade class raised the most money, $278.53.

As part of the effort, students learned about various forms of cancer, watched videos on the subject, and discussed how to treat people diagnosed with cancer with care and kindness. Teachers also tied math lessons into the project, discussing the value of coins and how they add up.

Pangborn counselor Anne Wilson said, “The students learned a number of key lessons from the project, including how big a difference little people can make for everyone.”
