HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 31, 2005) – The Washington County School Counselors Association (WCSCA) has announced the winners of their 2005 Scholarship Awards. Melissa Ankeney from Clear Spring High and Andrew Staubs from Boonsboro High were each awarded $650.00 toward their post-secondary education. This years recipients were chosen from a pool of thirty applicants. A panel of judges reviewed each application using scholastic achievement, community involvement, leadership, and financial need as criteria. Funds for the WCSCA Scholarships are raised through the annual WCSCA softball game. The game is organized by Earl Meagher, counselor at Clear Spring Middle School. All Washington County School employees are asked to donate money to the scholarship fund. Those who make donations are recognized in the game program. Funds are also raised by selling advertising space in the program to local businesses. This year two games were played. In game one, eighth grade students from Springfield Middle School and Clear Spring Middle School squared off. The Springfield team was victorious by a score of 11 to 7. Game two pitted city, county and state police officials against staff and alumni from Clear Spring schools. The final score was, Police 15, Clear Spring 10. “The Washington County School Counselor’s Association would like to congratulate Melissa and Andrew on their accomplishments and wish them well with their future endeavors,” said Earl Meagher, counselor at Clear Spring Middle School. “The Association would also like to thank all those who participated, especially the players, contributors, and advertisers. The Scholarship Fund exists because of your support.”
