HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 1, 2006) – The 25th Annual True Grit Awards Dinner Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Hagerstown. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. A senior student/athlete from each WCPS high school will be honored for overcoming adversity to become a great classmate, teammate, and an inspiration within the school community. Students from each non-public high school in Washington County and a student from Hagerstown Community College will also be honored. “Hearing the stories behind the success of these student/athletes touches all of us,” according to Ed Masood, WCPS Supervisor of Athletics, Health and Physical Education, and Fine Arts. “They are a different kind of superstar for their character, hard work, dedication, and team and school spirit.” The keynote speaker is known as a “True Grit” story himself. Nelson C. Lauver, a native of central Pennsylvania, is known nationally as the “Great American Storyteller,” a syndicated radio personality who is heard twice daily on WJEJ Radio, 1240 AM in Hagerstown. Each True Grit recipient is awarded a $500 post-secondary scholarship, a one-year membership to the Hagerstown YMCA, and a plaque commemorating the honor. WCPS 2006 True Grit Award Winners:
