Kindergarten Registration

For registration, it is recommended that you contact your child's school in advance so that staff can prepare materials for you and make your visit an efficient one.

Department Description

To register children for school a parent/legal guardian must go to the school district that they live in, the following documents are required to register: 1) Birth certificate, 2) Immunization records, 3) Health Inventory completed by child's doctor within last 6 months, 4) proof of residency (mortgage/rental agreement, current within the last 3 months, electric/water bill). A telephone bill and/or driver's license are NOT acceptable. Registration may be done during regular business hours at the school, or during the four system-wide registration dates.

If a child is 4 before September 1st, the child is eligible for pre-kindergarten. If a child is 5 before September 1st, the child is eligible for kindergarten. Pre-kindergarten applicants must meet income eligibility guidelines. For more information about those guidelines, please call 301-766-2955.

To be eligible for consideration for early admission to kindergarten, the child must be five years old by October 31.

To begin the early admissions assessment process, parents/guardians must send a written request to the Director of Student Services by July 15th.

The request should include the child's name, birthdate, address, school attendance area, and telephone number. The assessments will be scheduled and completed during the summer.

Please note changes in school schedules in relation to inclement weather situations. When a two-hour delay is called, there will be no a.m. or p.m. pre-kindergarten. If school is dismissed two hours early, the a.m. pre-kindergarten students will stay until dismissal and ride the bus home with the other students. There will be no p.m. pre-kindergarten in the case of an early dismissal.
