The WCPS athletic program operates under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Six of the seven WCPS high schools – Boonsboro, Clear Spring, North Hagerstown, Smithsburg, South Hagerstown and Williamsport, compete in the Antietam Conference of the Monocacy Valley Athletic League (MVAL), which also includes all high public schools in Carroll County and Frederick County (MD). Hancock High School competes in the Apple Valley League. All WCPS high schools also compete in the MPSSAA District 1, which includes public high schools from Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett and Washington counties.
