North Hagerstown, Williamsport, Smithsburg and Hancock high schools have been named to the annual Newsweek magazine list of "America's Top High Schools." The rankings are based on student enrollment in more rigorous course offerings like Advanced Placement classes. Newsweek named Maryland the number one state in the rankings, with more than half of the state's public high schools making the list.

A packet of information containing an overview and application for either the elementary or middle school magnet program is now available for pickup or download. Open houses and testing dates have been scheduled, too. The application deadline is December 3, 2010.

The new school year is underway in the Washington County Public Schools. Please be aware that thousands of WCPS students will be driving, riding and walking to school, so we ask you to obey traffic laws and stay alert for young people, especially in school zones. We thank you for supporting your children and their teachers, in and out of the classroom this year!

The 2010-2011 edition of the Washington County Public Schools Handbook & Guide is available. The annual publication contains valuable information about schools, staff, programs and policies. Also, there are forms in the handbook that parents/guardians must complete and submit to the school(s) their children attend. There are links to the Handbook throughout the website, including the Quick Links here on the home page.
The Washington County Board of Education approved redistricting recommendations at January and February business meetings, so there are changes in the schools that some WCPS elementary students will attend in 2010-2011. A summary of each recommendation is available.
