North Hagerstown, Williamsport, Smithsburg and Hancock high schools have been named to the annual Newsweek magazine list of "America's Top High Schools." The rankings are based on student enrollment in more rigorous course offerings like Advanced Placement classes. Newsweek named Maryland the number one state in the rankings, with more than half of the state's public high schools making the list.

A packet of information containing an overview and application for either the elementary or middle school magnet program is now available for pickup or download. Open houses and testing dates have been scheduled, too. The application deadline is December 3, 2010.

Ashley Willingham of Washington County Technical High School won first place in Preschool Teaching at the National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City, MO, June 21 - 25, 2010. It is the second time a Tech High student won gold at the national event. Also earning top ten honors: Katie Coffman, 6th place for Health Occupations and the team of Keegan Boyce, Alexander Burt and Taylor Davis, 10th place for Engineering Technology. Tech High had 12 students who earned a trip to nationals, where they competed with nearly 6,000 students from secondary and post secondary technical schools from across the country.

The Washington County Board of Education approved redistricting recommendations at January and February business meetings, so there are changes in the schools that some WCPS elementary students will attend in 2010-2011. A summary of each recommendation is available.
